With the establishment of Centres of Excellence at leading African universities, the DAAD is pursuing the goal of creating modern educational capacities with supraregional influence. Improving the educational quality and expanding the research capacity at these world-class hubs will enable the next generation of leaders to acquire a training in line with international standards.

After a competitive call for applications, which the DAAD directed at all German universities and selected African universities, an independent selection committee reviewed the numerous applications and identified seven outstanding cooperation projects between German and African universities. This process resulted in the establishment of five Centres of Excellence in Africa.
The programme is funded within the scope of the 'Aktion Afrika' programme of the German Federal Foreign Office.
